PLANO (1080 KRLD) - The Plano city council has approved a $1 billion redevelopment project to give the dying mall a new lease on life.

The plan would bulldoze parts of the old Collin Creek building, and add over 3000 new apartments, homes and senior living units. Restaurants, parks and a lagoon are also part of the project.

Many in the area near Highway 75 and Plano Parkway are excited to see the development bring new life to their neighborhood, believing they’re long overdue for some revitalization.

Most of Collin Creek Mall is now under the ownership of development company Centurion American, which will be in charge of the new project. JC Penney still owns part of the property. Experts say that having multiple owners of Collin Creek is what derailed new development in the past.

Plano city council will now have to work out how many taxpayer dollars will be needed to fund the new development. However, they plan to hit the ground running and start construction as early as July.
