AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - State Representative Roland Gutierrez held a Capitol press conference to push for support of his bill to legalize gaming in Texas.

Gutierrez made a financial argument for the state to consider allowing gambling. “The money we have lost to the State’s all around us have cost Texas consumers millions and millions of dollars and have built the schools for New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana, they built their roads, they built their infrastructure.”

Gutierrez says their constituents expect them to create revenue that doesn’t cost the taxpayer’s money and this is one way they can do that. “The state of Texas loses over $23 billion to every state around us. That’s over $2 to $4 billion in taxing revenue.”

Gutierrez says he’s not asking for casinos on every corner. “We’re asking for 13 destination resort casinos and that’s something that’s palatable, something that we can do right in Texas.”

Gutierrez also talking about making Texas a desired location for boxing like the upcoming Welterweight Championship fight at AT&T Stadium in March. “When we have events like this it means tourism, it means more dollars for our community, it means more people coming from all over the world.”

The legislation doesn’t have a great deal of support in the State Senate. Gutierrez thinks it’s essential for lawmakers to have the conversation. “We know that the Senate can’t get their hands around this notion of gaming in Texas, but the reality is we have to start talking about gaming and gambling in Texas and we have to start talking about leakage and the money we are losing to the state’s around our great state.”

Any gaming legislation that would happen in Texas would first take a constitutional amendment requiring a popular vote.
