$1.6 Billion Expansion Of I-35W To Officially Open

July 18, 2018 - 5:29 am

FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Construction crews are getting ready to cut the ribbon on the $1.6 billion dollar expansion of I-35W in Fort Worth.

Construction on I-35W started in 2013 to add 'TexPress' lanes from the Decatur cut-off  north of I-820 to I-30 downtown.

Crews say that stretch of I-35W now carries an estimated 132,000 cars a day. That's up from 110,000 when the project started. About eleven percent of the traffic is from trucks.

They've rebuilt exits with continuous frontage roads north of downtown and added two 'TexPress' lanes in each direction from Northside Drive for three miles to near downtown Fort Worth.

While most construction along I-35W is wrapping up about six weeks early, some connectors in and out of downtown Fort Worth still need work...and that work will continue through the rest of the year.

TXDot is also considering a plan to expand 35W farther north, from 287 to Alliance Airport.
