DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Almost 30-years to the day when the attack happened, a Houston man has been charged with capital murder in the death of a Highland Park Doctor.

When Doctor Katherine Bascone was raped and strangled in June of 1988, she suffered brain damage and had been in a vegetative state.

Police used a rape kit to gather evidence, but in 1988 there was no such thing as DNA testing. By the time that came around in the 90's, the statute of limitations on rape had expired So police had a rape kit with DNA but nobody they could charge.

Bascone's 30-years on life support ended in February when she died of complications to her attack.

Dallas County prosecutor Leighton D'Antone says that was a game changer.

"We realized we had a potential murder investigation that we were able to go get the evidence and have it tested" said D'Antone. "Not only did it produce DNA results, it produced DNA that helped us quickly identify a suspect."

That DNA led them to another former doctor, 56-year old George Guo. He was arrested in Houston and is now back in Dallas County charged with Bascone's murder.

Guo could face the death penalty.
