DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Dallas appears to be trying to follow Austin's suit when it comes to "paid sick leave."

Advocates are pushing for a local ordinance requiring private employers to provide paid sick leave, but before Dallas could pass an ordinance, the group has to fill up a petition with thousands of signatures.

A similar ordinance was passed in Austin, but it's now the subject of a lawsuit.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton joined the suit, calling the capital city's ordinance unlawful and accused city leaders of trying to go above lawmakers' heads.

The group in Dallas has 34 days to collect signatures and turn them into the city.

A similar petition effort, backed by some of the same groups, is underway in San Antonio.
