ANNA (1080 KRLD) - Police in Anna are warning residents of a deceptive advertising scam that is showing up in the city.

Lt. Pete Copin says some folks are getting a peculiar notice in the mail.

"Its notifying them that they have a package that's been undeliverable -- final notice," says Lt. Copin.

But when people call the number on the card, they get something else entirely. "They're trying to sell them a water filter system," Copin says.

Using the mail for direct marketing is not illegal, but this type of "bait and switch" scheme certainly is. "It would fall under deceptive business practices," Copin says.

If you do get one of these cards in the mail, Copin says don't call the number listed. "Don't give them any personal information," he says.

In fact, the best thing to do is to simply throw it out.

"I wouldn't recommend doing business with them," Copin says. "Apparently, they're not very reputable if they have to resort to these means."
