DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Atmos Energy will ask a Dallas City Council committee for a rate increase Monday.

The Dallas City Council's Government Performance and Financial Management Committee will consider the increase at its meeting Monday afternoon.

Atmos says the increase would help pay for the replacement of more than a hundred miles of pipe.

Atmos began replacing pipe after explosions last year. One of those explosions killed an 11-year-old girl.

Atmos says it spent $119 million last year and is asking for an increase that would cost the average residential customer $3.05 per month.

The change would take effect in June, but the Dallas city manager has recommended the council reject the request.

If the council rejects the rate increase, Atmos could appeal to the Railroad Commission of Texas.
