EL PASO (1080 KRLD) - Customs and Border Protection agents have installed concrete barriers and concertina wire at the four crossings bridging El Paso and Cuidad Juarez.

Customs and Border Protection Officials claim this is due to increasing numbers of migrants arriving in Juarez. He says it's to prevent a surge of illegal immigrants.  "Similar efforts were executed by CPB in California and in South Texas.  Everyone is familiar with the reports of the caravans moving through Mexico.  Those in Piedras Negras were recently moved to other border cities including Juarez, so we are preparing for the potential that we may face in the days ahead."

Maier says they saw a surge in Southern California, "where a mass of people attempted to make entry without inspection and overwhelmed the facilities.  Our efforts are designed to prevent that from happening here."

El Paso Congresswoman Veronica Escobar issued the following statement in response.

"The barricades constructed today at our ports of entry by CBP are an affront to the El Paso-Juarez border region's efforts and work to become a world-renowned destination for international trade and innovation.

"Our bridges are a symbol of our history with Mexico, our strong binational ties and shared interests, and should not become militarized zones based on a misguided policy rooted in fear.

"The Trump administration's xenophobic policies harm our economic and cultural vibrancy. It's time to address our challenges with smart, safe and humane border policies. Our border communities deserve better."
