DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke is officially joining the 2020 presidential race.

Alongside his wife Amy, O’Rourke made a video announcement this morning after months of speculation on whether he would mount a 2020 campaign. Before the formal announcement, he first confirmed his plans to a TV station in his hometown of El Paso.

O’Rourke’s Senate race against Ted Cruz and his close loss in November have made him into a well-known figure in the Democratic party. His video announcement touches back to that grassroots campaign, as he calls for potential voters to rally their neighborhoods. The video also touches on issues such as immigration, healthcare and climate change.

O’Rourke joins a crowded pool of Democratic presidential candidates including Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris and fellow Texan Julian Castro. He’ll spend a few days in Iowa, but hasn't announced any plans on staffing his campaign.

O’Rourke plans to hold a kickoff rally in El Paso on March 30.
