CARROLLTON (KRLD) - Police in Carrollton say a man killed his wife on Monday before killing himself. The couple's two teen-aged children survived and are staying with relatives.

Police were originally dispatched to the home on Captsone Drive after getting a 9-1-1 call from a neighbor. "The neighbor was reporting that two teen-agers had come to their home and reported that their father was assaulting their mother, and gunshots were heard after the teenagers left the home," said Jolene Devito with the Carrollton Police Department.

When officers arrived on-scene, they found 49-year-old Nigel Jerome "Damian" Deriggs in his front yard with a shotgun. Police say he refused officers' instructions to drop the weapon and retreated back inside the home. Officers tried to make contact, but heard a single gunshot from inside the home a few minutes later.

"Our SWAT team was able to create an entrance at the back of the home to send the drone in," Devito said. The department used both a ground unit and aerial drone to gather images from inside the home without placing officers at risk. Those images revealed two dead bodies inside the home.

Police say Deriggs had shot and killed his wife, 46-year-old Michelle, before they arrived - then shot himself inside the home. The couple's two kids were not physically injured and are staying with other family members. "Obviously, this is a traumatic experience for them, and we're doing what we can to make sure they have any resources to help them through this," Devito said.

Carrollton Police are still trying to determine what led up to the shooting. "We do not have any significant prior calls involving this family or this address," Devito said. "Our detectives are trying to piece together what went on. We're taking every step that we can to make sure we have as clear a picture of what happened as possible."
