CEDAR HILL (1080 KRLD) - Austin Assistant Police Chief Ely Reyes has been named the new Chief of the Cedar Hill Police Department.

City Manager Greg Porter made the decision after the city posted the position and conducted an extensive search.

Assistant Chief Rodney Thompson has been serving as Cedar Hill's Interim Chief since Chief Steve Rhodes retired earlier this year. He had been the Chief of Police in Cedar Hill for 23 years and had more than 36 years of law enforcement experience.

Chief Reyes has been with the Austin Police Department since the mid 1990's. He joined APD after serving 6 years in the US Army. He started as a patrol officer with the Austin Police Department and eventually worked his way up to the position of Assistant Chief. He had applied for the job of Police Chief in Seattle and was one of the finalists for that position last year.

Reyes is originally from San Jose, California.
