DALLAS (KRLD) - A new minor-league baseball team is coming to Dallas, and the league plans to build a new ballpark to host the franchise.

The Southwest League of Professional Baseball has reached a deal with the City of Dallas for its franchise to play at Reverchon Park in Oak Lawn near The Katy Trail. As part of the deal, the league will renovate the park and build a new stadium there.

"It will be a multi-purpose venue that will have professional baseball, amateur baseball, professional and amateur soccer, rugby...concerts, festivals, charity events, corporate events," said League President Mark Schuster. "It's a venue that should be utilized year-round, that's our plan."

The league already has announced plans for teams in Waco and Royse City. It plans to start play in April of 2019.

"It's been a number of years since Dallas had its own team," said Schuster. "We can't be more excited to bring minor league baseball there to play in this new stadium that we're going to design and build there along with the city."

The league is holding a contest to name the Dallas team. They're accepting entries on their website starting on Tuesday at 10:00am.
