DALLAS (KRLD) - North Texas police officers and other first responders were honored for their service in a special ceremony today.

Governor Greg Abbott hosted the Star of Texas Awards at the Capitol. The awards praise the valor of police and first responders who risk and sacrifice their lives.

Two honored today were Dallas officers Crystal Almeida and Rogelio Santander, who were both shot by a suspect in April as they helped an off-duty officer.

Santander died of his injuries, and Almeida continues to recover. Abbott praised both of them for their courage and service.

"They were more than just partners", Abbott says. "They were good friends who shared a close bond, as well as a commitment to serving their community."

Abbott also had some words for first responders' families, thanking them for their own sacrifices and support.

Other Dallas officers were honored, along with first responders from cities including Arlington and Flower Mound.
