DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - A North Texas woman was arrested in Florida for taking protected queen conch shells from the waters near Key West.

Officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission say 30-year-old Diana Fiscal-Gonzalez of Dallas was sentenced to 15-days in jail after she was caught taking nearly 40 queen conch shells from the sea on July 13.

Fiscal-Gonzalez apologized to Monroe County Judge Mark Wilson, saying she didn’t know it was against the law to take the state-protected shells, according to the Miami Herald

After the shells were seized, they were returned to the waters. Most of the conch were still alive, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife officials.

Fiscal-Gonzalez claimed she was going to give the shells away as gifts, according to the Miami Herald.

Along with the 15 days in jail, Fiscal-Gonzalez will have to serve 6 months of probation and will pay a $500 fine plus court costs.
