DALHART (1080 KRLD) - A woman in a small west Texas town is making history.

Erica Trevino said she's used to being told she can't do things because of her disability, and it was no different when the 25-year-old began pursuing her dream job of becoming a police officer.

Trevino, who has been deaf all of her life, went to West Texas A&M and graduated third in her class at the police academy. She was recently hired by the Dalhart Police Department, becoming the first female deaf commissioned officer in Texas.

The department is helping her every step of the way. It bought a special cell phone that will allow dispatchers to communicate with her and she won't be sent to a major call without back up.

Trevino's first day on the job will be April 14.
