DENTON (1080 KRLD) - Some North Texas firefighters are headed for the storm. Not Hurricane Florence, but an expected storm in the Gulf of Mexico.

Six Denton Firefighters are going to Galveston, as Governor Greg Abbott calls for cities along the Texas Gulf Coast to brace for a possible tropical storm later this week.

The firefighters are with a boat team, and will assist in rescue efforts if needed.

The National Weather Service says a weather system forming in the Gulf of Mexico has a 50/50 chance of developing into a tropical storm. Emergency services are preparing for heavy rainfall in any case.

David Boots with Denton Fire Department says more Denton firefighters could be deployed depending on the severity of the weather along the Gulf.
