DeSoto School Board To Vote On Laying Off Nearly 200 Teachers

April 29, 2019 - 12:26 pm

DESOTO (1080 KRLD) - The DeSoto school board will vote on laying off nearly 200 teachers tonight.

The district is dealing with a massive budget shortfall and cutting jobs appears to be inevitable.

The board is expected to vote tonight on cutting 277 jobs and that includes more than 160 teachers.

District leaders say they are dealing with a multi-million dollar budget shortfall because of mismanagement by previous administrators.

Parents are demanding answers.

The board has already voted to shut down Northside Elementary at the end of the school year. The shutdown is said to be temporary.

Students who attend Northside will be absorbed by Ruby Young Elementary and The Meadows elementary this fall.

The school closing and the proposed layoffs would save the district about $20 million.

The board meets to vote at 6:00 p.m. tonight.
