DUNCANVILLE (1080 KRLD) - A crew with DeSoto Fire Rescue pulled a teenager to safety on Wednesday after he was injured along Ten Mile Creek.

The incident occurred in Duncanville, but the two cities have a mutual-aid agreement for the first responders and the DeSoto crew was closest to the scene.

The teenager and several friends were trying to swim in the creek and jumped into the water from an embankment. The teen hit a ledge on the way down and injured his back and legs. His friends pulled him to safety on the ledge but he was unable to make his way out under his own power.

A team from DeSoto Fire Rescue responded. Captain Craig Kirk swam across the creek to retrieve the patient - then guided him back across the water to safety.

"DeSoto is big on training and preparedness, and we always have a trained Swift Water Technician assigned to every shift," noted DeSoto Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief Bryan Southard.

The patient was taken to Methodist Dallas Medical Center for treatment.
