PLANO (1080 KRLD) - Collin Creek Mall is scheduled to close July 31 to be demolished and rebuilt as a $1 billion mixed-use development. The mall first opened in 1981.

"Myself, being sixth generation Collin County, I grew up going to that mall," says Sean Terry, vice president at Centurion, the company leading the project. "That was the only mall in Collin County for probably 20 years."

But as tastes have changed, the mall had struggled to retain tenants. Centurion is planning to demolish the mall and rebuild the 100 acre site with shopping, restaurants, 2,300 apartments and additional single family homes. A hotel will also be built at the site.

Centurion estimates construction will take five to six years. Later phases of construction will include more than a million square feet of office space.

The rebuilt mixed-use development will include 9 acres of parks, 1.6 acres of hiking trails and a lagoon. Terry says the water feature should be visible from Highway 75.

"We want to build that mall up so it can be visible from 75 and really give it some exposure so people can actually see what's there," Terry says. He says Centurion is building 2,000 underground parking spaces.

JCPenney is the only "big box" retailer still open at Collin Creek Mall. That store and the road around the outside of the mall will stay open throughout the project.

Friday evening, Centurion is hosting a "farewell party" for the mall. Admission is free, and Terry says free hot dogs and ice cream will be served.

The party runs from 6-9 p.m. People will be able to take pictures and walk through the mall. Mayor Harry LaRosiliere will speak at 7.

Terry says the party will include live music by the 80s cover band, M80s.

"Just kind of come and say goodbye to the mall, but also to get people excited for the future," he says. "We're going to have an old DeLorean there, an 80s car for people to look at and take pictures with. Just a fun event."

People who want to attend the party Friday evening are asked to RSVP at www.ccmkickoff2019.com.
