IRVING (1080 KRLD) - A trade organization has named DFW Airport "Global Airport of the Year."

Air Transport World chose DFW, citing a "world-class customer experience," the airport's partnership with airlines and "global leadership in sustainability."

DFW is the only "carbon neutral" airport in North America.

"I love to win," says Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings. "To beat everyone else, to win the 'World Cup' of airports is a great day for North Texas."

Previous winners include London Heathrow and the airports in Hong Kong and Singapore

"The company you keep means something, and this just recognizes DFW Airport is on the international stage as well," says DFW Airport Chief Executive Sean Donohue.

Dononue says DFW now has the most domestic destinations of any airport in the United States. He says DFW has also doubled flights to Europe over the past four years and will add more international flights this year.

"We've seen some of the fastest international growth of any major US airport in the last five years," Dononue says. "We're going to see even more next year with service to Dublin and Munich. We've got Air France coming in to Paris."
