GRAND PRAIRIE (KRLD)-The Texas Department of Public Safety is adding the Grand Prairie driver license office to its Summer Safety Initiative, which is designed to protect customers from standing out in the dangerous heat.

DPS officials say summer is among the busiest times at DL offices, and several North Texas locations with limited physical waiting space regularly have lines outside.  Through August 31st, overflow customers at the offices in Denton, Grand Prairie, Plano and Rockwall will be asked to visit the nearest alternative location:

  • For the Grand Prairie office:  Customers will be referred to the Fort Worth DPS Mega Center (8301 Brentwood Stair) or the Dallas South Mega Center (39025 LBJ Service Rd.)
  •
  • For the Denton office:  Customers will be referred to the Carrollton Mega Center (4600 State Hwy. 121)
  •
  • For the Plano office:  Customers will be referred to the Garland Mega Center (4445 Saturn Rd., Suite A) or the Carrollton Mega Center (4600 State Hwy. 121)
  •
  • For the Rockwall office:  Customers will be referred to the Garland Mega Center (4445 Saturn Rd., Suite A) or the Garland Driver License Office (350 West I-30)

The DPS also advises customers to check if they can skip the trip to a DL office and conduct their business online.  The agency says for fiscal year 2017, more than half of all customers (3.6 million total) made an unnecessary trip when they could have taken care of matters online.
