DALLAS  (KRLD) - Texas State Rep. Eric Johnson defeated Dallas City Council member Scott Griggs Saturday night to become the new mayor of Dallas. Following his victory, Johnson addressed a crowd of his supporters:

"The voters of this city -- I have said since the first time I ran for office -- are smart," Johnson said. "And they're good people. And if they are given the information that they need to make an informed decision, they will get it right every time. And I think they got it right tonight.

Johnson won the race for mayor with 57 percent of the votes, Griggs finished with 43 percent. Both were top contenders in the May 4 mayoral election, with Johnson receiving the majority of votes the first time around as well.
