DALLAS (1080 KRLD) -  A person with a 'Beto' O'Rourke for Senate sign got a mailer with the Texas.Gov, the state's official website on the letterhead threatening a fine.

Reports say the mailer read "any Beto signs must be removed or you will receive a $500 fine. This man is not worthy of running for office in the state of Texas."  Under that were the words "Beto Reality Check" in bold and reasons not to vote for the Democratic candidate for senate.

Zenen Jaimes with the Texas Civil Rights Project says this is a contentious election. "This is one example of things that are happening. Folks are trying to scare people in to not voting. Folks are trying to intimidate others. We've seen people who have gotten their yard signs torn up or stolen from both sides."

He says this is, so far, their only confirmed case. "We are actively looking at others and have reason to believe that other voters did receive this."

He says the Austin address listed on the envelope was false, and the mailer was actually sent from north Houston.

Zenen says they have been in communication with the Texas Secretary of State's office and may file a complaint.
