COLLIN COUNTY (KRLD) - In a reverse decision, the Collin County town of Farmersville has approved plans to build a Muslim cemetery.

The Collin County Islamic Association was given the green light at a city council meeting yesterday. For years controversy has surrounded the idea of a Muslim cemetery. It took the threat of a federal lawsuit to get this approval. That lawsuit would have accused the town of violating a land law that was meant to prevent discrimination.

Early plans show 34 acres being set aside for the Muslim cemetery. It could include about 11 thousand burial sites, some walkways and a canopy.

Those plans have yet to be finalized. The Collin County Islamic Association can start the process of building the cemetery whenever they choose.
