DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The Dallas Morning News reports that a summertime operation run by Dallas Police in which certain high crime neighborhoods have been targeted, has managed to put a dent in the rising numbers of violent crimes.

The latest stats show a month over month drop in July of 5% and in August a dip of 3.5%. DPD has been utilizing detailed crime maps to focus on four sections of the departments 7 patrol locations, Northeast, Southeast, South Central and Southwest.

Meanwhile, despite taking over 200 guns off the street during the summer operation, gun offenses are up 25% in the targeted areas. In addition, Dallas Police Association president Mike Matta has pointed to a loss of nearly 1000 officers over the past few years, as one of the reasons for the spike in crime. The goal is to hire 255 new officers this year. As of Friday they brought on 206.
