AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - Heading into the 2019 State Legislature the Texas Alliance for Life’s Dr. Joe Pojman says their top priority is to lobby lawmakers to further defund Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers and affiliates of abortion providers.

Pojman says they want to assure Texans that Planned Parenthood, which runs the largest chain of abortion facilities in the state, does not get any tax dollars at both the state level or the local level. “We believe it would be very possible for the Legislature to pass a bill that would prevent local political subdivisions, counties, cities and hospital districts from making contracts and giving money to Planned Parenthood.”

Planned Parenthood’s Yvonne Gutierrez says they plan to counter their efforts by utilizing their base to vote out lawmakers in November who want to defund them at the local level as their goal.

She thinks the anti-abortion groups are making the assumption that they’re going to have elected officials to work with in order to successfully move these initiatives through the Legislature. “Planned Parenthood has larger support in Texas than the NRA, and I don’t believe a priority of Texans is to decrease access to health care by preventing Planned Parenthood from participating.”

It was announced on Thursday that the health care provider is one of 96 organizations that will also be getting additional funding under the federal family planning program this year.
