HOUSTON (1080 KRLD) - A fire that started Sunday at a chemical storage facility near Houston has been extinguished.

Intercontinental Terminals Company says fires destroyed several tanks and damaged others, but ITC says crews extinguished the last of the fires about 3 o'clock Wednesday morning.

ITC says people may still see smoke and steam rising from the facility Wednesday, and crews would continue spraying water and foam on the tanks to prevent them from reigniting.

Crews had been taking a defensive approach, focusing on trying to prevent the fire from spreading. Tuesday afternoon, they shifted to an offensive approach.

No one was hurt, but air quality monitoring will continue. Wednesday morning, ITC said chemical readings were "well below" hazardous levels.

Harris County, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and EPA have been working together to monitor air and water quality. ITC has said some chemicals stored in the tanks washed into the Houston Ship Channel.

Several school districts and San Jacinto College plan to stay closed Wednesday.
