SOUTHLAKE (1080 KRLD) - A former swim coach is on trial, charged in connection with the drowning death of a 13-year-old.

Elise Cerami died in June of 2016 during practice at the Carroll ISD Aquatics Center. Her instructor, Tracey Anne Boyd, is charged with abandonment and endangering of a child by criminal negligence in connection with her death.

Prosecutors say Boyd was not playing attention and failed to make sure the teen was safe during practice.

Her attorney says the drowning was a horrible accident and Boyd should not be held criminally responsible.

There were no lifeguards on duty during practice the day of the drowning, but just weeks later the Carroll ISD began staffing the aquatic center with lifeguards.
