FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Streets will start closing in Fort Worth Friday evening for this weekend's Christmas tree lighting and Parade of Lights.

The city moved the events to the weekend before Thanksgiving three years ago in an effort to encourage more shopping downtown the weekend after Thanksgiving.

"That's what we're hoping this contributes to," says Sundance Square CEO Johnny Campbell. "I know when all the Christmas decorations are up, the lights are out and people are smiling, it'll be a perfect scene."

Main Street will close at 6 p.m. Friday between Weatherford and 1st Street and from 8th Street to 9th Street.

The Christmas tree lighting will take place at 6:30 Saturday evening. The 59 foot blue spruce arrived from Michigan last week.

"We're moving Santa Claus from the base of the tree over to the stage area," Campbell says. "So the tree is just going to stand pristine from everything else. It should be a great photo op."

Campbell says "selfie stations" will be set up across Sundance Square Plaza.

The Parade of Lights starts Sunday at 6 pm. This year's theme marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of Cook Children's Medical Center.

Volunteers will hand out 20,000 blue lights along the parade route.

This year's route has changed. The parade will start at Weatherford and Throckmorton, move east on Weatherford to Commerce, south on Commerce to 9th Street, west on 9th to Houston, north on Houston to 2nd Street, west on 2nd to Throckmorton then south to 3rd Street.
