A Garland park that's been a popular destination for visitors on previous holidays is closed today. City officials decided to close Windsurf Bay Park because of concerns about safety.

In the past, thousands of people have visited the park for Memorial Day and Independence Day. But the city's Police Chief recently told the City Council that the crowds had gotten too big.

There's only one road into or out of the park, and the Police Chief expressed concern about the ability of first responders to access the area in the event of an emergency.

The city will re-open the park on Thursday, July 5th. There is a temporary fence separating the Garland city park from the shoreline of Lake Ray Hubbard, which is under the jurisdiction of the City of Dallas.
That fence will be removed on Sunday, July 8th.
