AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - At a State Capitol press conference on Thursday Governor Abbott spoke of a recent conversation with Vice President Pence where Abbott urged the Trump administration to find a way to stem the influx of migrants without slapping a five percent tariff on imports from Mexico.

Abbott said, “Tariffs pose a problem for the State of Texas. Texas leads the nation in exports. Our trade with Mexico is prolific and (raising tariffs) will not be beneficial to the trade situation with Mexico.”

Abbott remains confident there won’t be a need for the Trump administration to raise the tariffs as has been threatened. He added, “So I urged the Vice President to have the administration work on strategies that will better secure our border in ways that do not involve tariffs.”

Talks between the Trump administration and Mexico to try and stop the increasing tide of undocumented migrants crossing the southern U.S. border have been ongoing since Wednesday.
