DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The Southern Baptist Convention's annual meetings have started with a speech from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, and a request to cancel an appearance by Vice President Mike Pence.

An estimated 15,000 people are expected to attend the weekend event in downtown Dallas at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

Governor Greg Abbott spoke at the meeting Tuesday morning and said Texans came together after Hurricane Harvey regardless of race or religion.

But one pastor proposed an amendment to take back the church's invitation for Vice President Mike Pence to speak, and replace the speech with a time of prayer. The church rejected the amendment.

A pastor from Virginia said the White House reached out to the church, not the other way around. He cited a bible verse that said to fear God and honor the king, so the church should show hospitality to people in authority.
