RICHARDSON (1080 KRLD) - The Richardson Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association has met its fund-raising goal to cover the cost of new freeway signs honoring Officer David Sherrard.

Officer Sherrard was shot and killed in the line of duty in 2018 while responding to a disturbance call at an apartment complex.

The Texas Legislature approved a measure to designate part of US Highway 75 in Richardson as the the Officer David Sherrard Memorial Highway. However, lawmakers prevented any state funding to be used for the new signs. The  Richardson Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association has been raising money for the project and has issued a statement that it has met its goals.

"Contributors can take pride knowing they have helped honor Officer Sherrard and his sacrifice, thank you," the Richardson Police Department wrote on its Facebook page.

The cost for the design, construction and installation of the signs is expected to be around $24,000.
