DALLAS (KRLD) - The Dallas zoo says a 7-year-old hippo passed away suddenly.

The hippo's keepers and the vet team at the zoo had been monitoring Adhama's health since late last week...and noticed some lethargy and a diminished appetite.

He spent Monday and Tuesday under observation and resting --- but there was nothing to indicate there was something serious going on.  Then last night -- Adhama's keepers noticed he was unresponsive... and the animal care team discovered he died suddenly.   According to their preliminary findings....he suffered from an acute inflammation of the intestine.

Adhama had been with the Dallas Zoo since last year...when they opened the Simmons Hippo Outpost.
