Judge: Texas In Violation Of National Voter Registration Act

April 04, 2018 - 6:21 am

AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - A Federal Judge has found Texas in violation of National Voter Registration Act.

The judge ruled the State of Texas has ignored the Motor Voter provisions requiring the Department of Public Safety, the state agency that handles drivers licenses, to simultaneously treat each driver license application and renewal as an application for voter registration. The lawsuit was filed by the Texas Civil Rights Project.

The judge ruled the state failed to register Texans to vote when they updated their driver license information online.

"We've got a decades-old federal law that is meant to bring more eligible citizens on to the roles, and the state is actively failing to comply with that" says Beth Stevens with the Texas Civil Rights Project.

Stevens says this affects up to 1.5 million Texans every year .

Three plaintiffs filed suit when they were led to believe they registered to vote when updating or renewing their driver license.

No word yet if Texas will appeal the ruling.
