DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - One of the attorneys that defended convicted Kaufman county murderer Eric Williams has been arrested for sexual assault of a child.

Defense lawyer Maxwell Peck faces eight counts of sexually assaulting a child after his arrest near Amarillo.

One of the prosecutors who sent former Kaufman County Justice of the Peace Eric Williams to death row does not think the arrest of a defense attorney will affect appeals.

Toby Shook says it's possible the defense will raise the issue during Williams' appeal. But Shook says the only argument the defense can make is that Peck was ineffective as an attorney, and his arrest in Amarillo has nothing to do with that point.

During Williams death penalth hearing, Peck used repeated Biblical references. It didn't work and the jury sentneced Williams to death for murdering Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife in March of 2013.

Police say he also killed Assistant DA Mark Hasse two months earlier in Kaufman, though that charge is technically still pending.
