AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - The legislation authorizes at least $9 billion dollars for critical water infrastructure projects across the US, including flood protection and drinking water improvements.

Texas Senator John Cornyn says legislation like this can help the coastal region be prepared for future storms, especially as Texas continues to rebuild after Hurricane Harvey. “One provision I included in this bill is one to expedite a federal study of the so-called coastal spine which is an important step to protect the Houston ship channel and people along the Gulf Coast from future storms.”

The bill also authorizes a project from Sabine Pass to Galveston Bay that will update the levy system and construct new ones by widening channels, replacing bridges and renovating dams.

Cornyn says this will also ensure the Texas is coast prepared for future hurricanes.

President Trump is expected to sign America’s Water Infrastructure Act this week.
