DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - An 85-year-old Amarillo man lies in serious condition after he was mauled this week by two loose dogs owned by his neighbors.

The victim had surgery following the attack.

Richard Havens, director of Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare says the victim was getting out of his car, in his driveway when "they went up and not only attacked him, but they mauled him.  His legs were attacked, his arms were attacked and his face was attacked.  I've got over a decade of experience with this and this case took my breath away."

KFDA in Amarillo says the dogs were a Shepard mix and a Pitbull mix.

Havens says the man might have died had it not been for the actions of another neighbor that happened to be home and heard him screaming and used a hose to strike the dogs to get them off the victim.  "I genuinely believe had it not been for this good Samaritan, at the end of the day he's just a flat-out hero in my book, that we would be talking about a fatality."

Havens says the neighbors response shocked him.  He says one told him her dog would never do this.  "And I told her, your dog did do this.  And what's even worse is when our officer went out to talk with them the following day, they laughed about it."

He does not know if the owners will face charges.  The dogs will be in quarantine for at least another week.  He says the owners are not willing to sign the dogs over, and they reviewing all the facts for a potential dangerous animal determination.  If that determination is made, the owners will be given a set of standards they'll have to adhere to or they will sign the animals over.  If that happens, the city will have the authority to euthanize the dogs.
