AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick presides over the Texas Senate, but he missed the first day of the legislative session so he could make a trip to Washington DC.

The Trump Administration says Patrick attended a meeting on border security at the White House.

Patrick was Texas chairman of President Trump's campaign in 2016. He says the president is "absolutely right" to call on Congress to pass his border security bill.

Patrick says 500,000 people were caught crossing the border illegally in 2018, with 300,000 of those apprehensions in Texas.

"Texans see first-hand the tragedies that take place at our border every day," Patrick wrote in a statement. "No one should have to die trying to come to America."

The president will make a trip to McAllen Thursday for a briefing with law enforcement and Customs and Border Protection. Patrick says he will join the president in McAllen.
