Man Who Killed Newlywed During Mesquite Robbery Set To Die

December 11, 2018 - 6:20 am

HUNTSVILLE (1080 KRLD) - A man convicted of attacking a couple in Mesquite in 1993 is scheduled to be executed Tuesday. Alvin Braziel was convicted of capital murder in 2001.

Prosecutors say Braziel killed a man and sexually assaulted his wife as they were walking around Eastfield College in Mesquite. The couple had been married ten days.

Braziel was not convicted of capital murder until 2001. He was serving time for sexual assault when DNA testing linked him to the case.

His lawyers have said Braziel's trial lawyer failed to present evidence of Braziel's head injuries, a family history of mental illness and exposure to drugs and alcohol in utero. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals upheld the sentence twice, and the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles voted unanimously to reject a reprieve last week.

Braziel would be the 13th person to be executed in Texas this year and the 24th person in the US. Texas has four executions scheduled in 2019.
