DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The man who caused a crash that sent two Dallas police officers to the hospital has now been charged with driving while intoxicated.

Maurice Hooker is a professional boxer. Earlier this year, he won a lightweight title.

Around 2:00 a.m. Tuesday, police say an officer saw Hooker speeding down I-35E. The officer started following Hooker, and police say Hooker then rear-ended another officer who was working traffic control in the construction zone at Empire Central.

The crash led to a chain reaction, where police say the officer following Hooker hit him, then they hit a third police car and a construction truck.

Two officers went to the hospital, but they are recovering. Hooker was also hospitalized, and police say tests show he was drunk.

A second person in Hooker's car was also hurt.

Hooker has been charged with DWI and illegally carrying a gun. The second charge can be used if the suspect was carrying a gun while drunk.
