Fort Worth Hostage Situation

FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - An active shooter situation inside a west Fort Worth apartment complex ended with the shooter dead.

It all started late this morning when a man held at least four people, including children, hostage inside a third floor unit at the Broadmoor Apartments near I-30 and Cherry Ln.

A woman called 911 and whispered to the operator that the man was holding everyone hostage.

Officers arrived and immediately came under gunfire.

“The suspect raised the weapon again, firing at the officers,” says Fort Worth Interim Police Chief Ed Kraus. “At least one of those rounds struck the shield that one of the officers was carrying.”

Neighbor Brooklyn Brown says she and her sister were frightened.

“We started hearing gunshots, so we ran into the closet, just to be safe,” says Brown. “All we heard was gunshots and loud noises, yelling, arguing.”

As the man was shooting at officers, he was using one of the children as a human shield.

“Because the suspect was using the child as a shield, officers could not return fire at that time and they backed away,” says Kraus.

A SWAT team was brought in.

“They went up to the apartment and decided to make entry,” Kraus says. “They breached the door and encountered the suspect still holding a weapon in close proximity to the children.”

That’s when the final confrontation took place.

“At least one shot was fired by our SWAT officers,” says Kraus. “The suspect was hit. He was taken to an area hospital and ... he has succumbed to his injuries and is now deceased.”

No one else inside the apartment was hurt, and no officers were hurt.
