McDonald's much-maligned McRib sandwich made its comeback a bit early this year.

The chain announced Thursday that the McRib is again available at many of its locations - for a limited time only, of course.

Described as an acquired taste by some, the McRib has built a cult following over the years, with devoted fans eagerly awaiting its annual return.  First introduced as "a new kind of 'cue" back in 1981, the McRib has come and gone over the years.  Since 2006, McDonald's has re-introduced it to the menu for a limited time in the fall.  McRib is a permanent item in Germany, where it is a big seller.

McRib was the brainchild of former McDonald's executive chef Rene Arend, who also came up with Chicken McNuggets in 1979.
