MESQUITE (1080 KRLD) - The city of Mesquite and Dallas County are starting construction on an update to Town East Boulevard. The project will run for about a mile south of Highway 80.

"Town East Boulevard is one of our main thoroughfares into our city," says Mesquite Mayor Stan Pickett. "We're in the industrial part of Mesquite. We have millions upon millions of dollars of business that travel up and down this corridor every day as well as our citizens traveling up and down this corridor, so we are needing to rebuild this road."

Pickett says Town East is an economic generator for the city, providing a connection from Highway 80 in the north to LBJ in the south.

While Town East Boulevard carries a large amount of truck traffic, Pickett says the noise had also become a distraction for neighborhoods nearby. The construction will move Town East away from neighborhoods and create a park and trail system.

"Noise and vibration are a big deal for us," he says. "Even though we're making the road better for mobility for our industrial folks, one of the big reasons we're redoing this road is to hopefully get the sound and vibrations away from these houses."

Dallas County is contributing $4.4 million to the $12.9 million project.

"Lots of big trucks come through here, and that really does a lot of damage to the roads," says County Commissioner Theresa Daniel. "I'm really proud of Mesquite. Their public works department has developed better, stronger means of laying surfaces on roads so they will last longer and be more cost effective."

The trail will ultimately extend to Garland.

Construction on Town East is expected to be finished by the end of next year.
