Mineral Wells Votes Down Anti-Abortion Ordinance

MINERAL WELLS (1080 KRLD) - Mineral Well has decided not to follow the lead of the East Texas city of Waskom.
The Mineral Wells City Council voted five to two against an ordinance that would have banned abortion clinics in the city.
The Waskom city council last month voted five to nothing in favor of what they are calling a "Sanctuary city for the unborn." There are no such clinics in either town.
Waskom's mayor warned they were in for a costly legal fight. The ACLU of Texas Drucilla Tigner says legal council advised the Mineral Wells city council to vote no. "The city council heard that advice loud and clear and decided their tax payer dollars are better used on economic development in their town as opposed to invited lawsuits they couldn't win."
She says there is litigation across the country on abortion bans. "They are clearly unconstitutional. That should be considered. Anyone who is considering following Waskom's lead should be prepared for a potential legal challenge that would be very expensive."
She says pro life groups are behind these bans, and they are focused on addressing the issues they believe the Texas legislature didn't address for them, and are taking it up at the local level
