The North Texas Municipal Water District is asking several cities in Dallas and Collin Counties to conserve water for the next few days as crews work to repair a broken water main in Richardson. The line that ruptured on Thursday is a major supply line that serves Richardson along with Garland, Murphy, Plano, Sachse and Wylie.

"We are asking that residents avoid outdoor watering to allow us time to make this repair," said Janet Rummel with the NTWMD. While service has not been disrupted to those communities, Rummel said, "this request is a precautionary measure to ensure we can continue to provide the water service needed in the  northern part of the system."

The City of Richardson is prohibiting all outdoor irrigation for Richardson utility water customers until further notice. City code enforcement officers are authorized to issue citations to those who do not comply.

Most other cities in the affected area have issued voluntary conservation requests.

Crews from the NTWMD will work through the weekend to repair the line. Officials with the NTWMD expect to have those repairs finished by 6:00pm on Tuesday, September 4th.
