ALLEN (1080 KRLD) - A new convention center under construction in North Texas is touted as the perfect size for more conventions and events, than the huge Kay Bailey Hutchison center in Dallas.

"And we're actually bidding on several youth and collegiate athlete competitions. Weight lifting, power lifting, tumbling, gymnastics, the way that the exhibit hall is laid out, we can bring in any floor that you want in that 40,000 aquare feet. A lot of these groups, 700 to 1,000 athletes coming to them, do not need several hundred thousand sqaure feet of space," said Kay Cromwell, Director of the Allen Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Cromwell says Watters Creek Convention Center at Hwy 75 and Bethany Drive will be a better fit, for nearly nine out of ten events, than Dallas' convention center.

Construction on Watters Creek, and the attached hotel, should be complete in December. The project is set to host its first corporate event next April.
