DALLAS (KRLD) - Poll numbers released by Quinnipiac University on Tuesday show Texas Senator Ted Cruz with 54-percent of likely Texas voters to challenger Congressman Beto O’Rourke’s 45-percent. This is the first poll in recent weeks that didn’t have the two Senate candidates within the margin of error of each other.

Texas Republican Party Chairman James Dickey says he’s not surprised by Cruz’s success. “Those polls showing things close was useful in that they encouraged all Texas Republicans to get out and vote…that we can’t take any race for granted.” Dickey thinks this poll might put an end to the fear that Senator Cruz’s campaign was in trouble. “Those who were trying to build a narrative that Senator Cruz is in deep-deep trouble, and Republican leadership is not respected and not appreciated by Texans the way that it in fact is…those, fortunately, have been put to lie.”

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Judge Gilbert Hinojosa doesn’t believe the poll accurately reflects the enthusiasm seen for O’Rourke statewide on the campaign trail. “There are a lot of people probably not being polled…new voters that have not been involved in other elections prior to now. That’s what you are seeing a lot with the Beto campaign.”

A Quinnipiac poll of Texas voters in August showed Cruz with a 6 percent lead.

The first of three debates between Cruz and O’Rourke is scheduled this Friday, September 21st at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
