FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - The price you pay to park at DFW Airport could soon change.

As recently as 2015, it cost $18 a day to park in the terminal parking lots at DFW Airport. It now costs $24 a day.

Despite that 33% increase, airport officials claim they are still falling well short of their parking revenue goal.

"Our parking revenues last year came in $10 million below our budget," says DFW Airport CEO Sean Donohue.

"They were flat year over year," Donohue continues. "But previously, our parking revenues were growing. We had increased prices. We thought we'd see the same trend. And obviously with the transportation network companies -- the Ubers and the Lyfts -- the whole market has changed."

Donohue says the airport is looking at a new pricing strategy.

"We're going to price it like airlines price - kind of like managed toll lanes in this area," he says.

Under the new pricing strategy, parking rates at the terminals would fluctuate based on how full the garages are.

"We're not going to take the rack rate of $24 and move it up to $40," says Donohue. "What we're really looking at is how we can drive more volume into the garages by being smart about the price points to incentify customers to use the garages more and more.

"It's foolish on a Saturday to charge $24 a day to park in the garage when the garage is forty percent full," Donohue says.

There's no word on what the pricing ranges will be or when the new pricing system will be implemented.
