ANNA (1080 KRLD) - As the old saying goes: When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

Amid a statewide order requiring people to wear masks inside businesses and at outdoor gatherings, the Anna Police Department is holding a mask design contest.

"Let's try to make some fun out of a bad situation," says Anna Police Chief Jeff Caponera. "We really wanted to throw a little bit of fun in this and to get the creative stuff out of all of our neighbors."

People are invited to decorate their face coverings to the best of their ability, snap a photo while standing with an Anna police officer nd wearing the face covering, and email it to policecomments@annatexas.gov.

"The winner of the contest, which will be selected by our neighbors off of our social media, will be treated to a lunch by the chief and will also receive one of the department's official challenge coins," says Chief Caponera.

There are a few ground rules.

"We won't accept any entries that are vulgar, obscene or anything of that nature," says Caponera. "I'm not real keen on keeping this political, so anything that's politically driven is not going to be accepted on either side."

Caponea says the contest is a way for police to reach out to the community.

"It's just a fun way for ... our officers to interact with our community and our community to interact with our officers," Caponera says. "But at the same time, it gives us an ability to see the creative side of everybody and to have just a little bit of fun with it and kind of put aside all the negativity that's going on in this world right now."

Entries are due Sunday, July 19, and the winner will be announced the week of July 27.
